Popular Science Takes The Aptera Electric Car For A Test Drive

Where Scifi meets the road

By Michael d'Estries

The new Aptera vehicle embodies everything science fiction dreamers thought automobiles would look like in the 21st Century. Minus, of course, the ability to fly. Not only is it crafted in a style that would make The Jetsons proud, but it uses electricity to quietly cruise the streets at speeds up to 90mph. Add in the “WTF is that?!” reaction from drivers and passerbys alike and you’ve got yourself the perfect excuse to fork over the under $30K or so needed for this ride.

Well, in my head at least, that’s the perfect excuse. The more reserved out there may want to wait a bit to see how this first generation of the Aptera does before getting rid of their Sonatas. There are, however, some other really cool facts about this car that might push you over. For instance:

  • Aptera founder and CEO Steve Fambro says sticking your hand out the window of an average car driving 55 mph creates more drag than the Aptera’s entire body.
  • The Typ-1 e uses a rearview system with three cameras that display images on small dash panels where analog gauges would normally sit. (Traditional rearview mirrors will still probably make it to production as well.)
  • The roof top solar panels can charge either you laptop or the vehicle’s AC system when not in use.
  • The Typ-1 e is expected to have a target range of 120 miles per charge. A ful1 recharge of the pack will take about 4 to 6 hours with a standard 110-volt outlet.

Here’s what Popular Science thought of the vehicle’s ride:

“Turn the dial to the “D” position, and the Aptera accelerates like many other pure EVs, with a constant rush of torque. The powertrain pulls strongly up to 50 mph or so (the fastest the streets on our route would allow). Interestingly, when you floor the accelerator, there’s a moment when the reareand jacks up slightly as the torque is applied. It’s a slight feeling, as it is on some shaft-drive motorcycles—and it’s kind of fun. It makes the acceleration feel stronger than it is.”

Ultimately, however, what really makes this thing worth believing in is to see it in motion. Jump here to check out PopSci’s full review and to catch the video test drive. You can visit Aptera’s official site here.

What do you think? Would you pick one up?

Eco Balls: Earth-friendly Alternative Cleaning Solutions

By Shabna John

If you are wondering what you can get for your mom or a friend this Christmas season I cannot think of a better combo than the Eco Balls, Magno Ball ( I got the spelling right) and Dryer Balls all gift-wrapped and left under the tree! (Hold that pun right there!) It is definitely one of the best buys this year.

Alternatively, you can transform your home into a greener, cleaner more energy efficient environment by buying these for yourself. They are all eco-friendly and price-friendly too. The Eco Ball is an ambitious dream come true.

The Ecozone Ecoballs® are environmentally friendly, cloth friendly and hypoallergenic alternative to traditional washing liquid but cleanses your clothes even better. An entire three-piece pack of Eco Balls is good for up to 1000 washes.

The Magno Ball is the eco-way to remove lime scale from washing machines and dishwashers and when used with the Eco Ball becomes an effective environmental cleaning solution. Not only are they easy on the pocket, they last up to 10 years and come with a 5-year guarantee on the magnets.

The Dryer Balls help you save money and reduces drying time by 25% while leaving you with naturally soft clothes. Dryer Balls make ironing easier and reduces lint and static. They are all non-toxic and hypoallergenic and last forever.

I had a hard time keeping the puns out of this post. Please feel free to comment!

Recharge Your Wallet with Moixa USB Batteries

By Shabna John

Moixa USBCELL is a great example of sustainable product design. Moixa Energy’s eco-friendly USBCELL battery category has been short listed for this year’s prestigious National Energy Efficiency Awards. It is also finalist for the 2007 Innovation in Engineering Awards alongside a Nuclear Power Station and High Speed Hybrid Train!

USBCELL Batteries are in rechargeable battery category that aims to reduce hassle, battery landfill, resource and C02 waste. It is easier to re-use anywhere by simply recharging from a USB port. Unlike other rechargeable batteries you do not have to find a power socket to charge your USBCell. Under the top of the AA battery is a USB dongle - the secret to USBCell’s success. You can plug in the battery into your USB socket and within a couple of hours your battery has 5 hours of charge.

Every individual, family and every company requires energy. Moixa USBCell helps you make significant changes in utilizing energy more efficiently. Every year over 15 billion alkaline batteries are thrown away globally creating toxic waste, squandering significant resources and C02 emissions. This leads to over 22,000 tonnes of landfill in the UK alone. Each USBCELL, if properly used, can save at least 3kg of toxic landfill and 7kg of C02 compared to disposable alkaline use.

Rechargeable batteries offer major advantages, by being re-usable and with USBCELL you can save money and do your bit to help the environment.

200mg Bottled Sunshine

By Shabna John

Designer Tobias Wong has come up with a very interesting designer product called the Sun Jar that captures sunlight. It is the ECO - FRIENDLY GIFT OF THE YEAR.

The Sun Jar is just that — a jar. During the day the jar that contains a solar charging panel and low voltage bulb stores up solar energy and by night fall turns itself on with a sumptuous orange glow. It comes with an auto light sensitive on/off switch.

Within the Sun Jar are a highly efficient solar cell, rechargeable battery and low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in sunlight the solar cell charges the battery over a few hours. When it is automatically switched on the light that emanates thru the jar mimics sunlight. It gives off a natural and warm light which is soothing and comforting. It’s a all weather Jar and can be used as a night light or even as a decorative light.

The Sun Jar is an incredible and rather pleasant lighting model. It truly combines aesthetics with eco-friendly concepts. Read more about it.

Pangea Organics: Packaging Sprouts Life

Pangea Organics goes the extra mile

By Shabna John

According to Joshua Scott Onysko, founder of Pangea Organics, you can be environmentally friendly and affordable at the same time. However, organic prices are often higher compared to their non-organic counterparts for a number of reasons. Joshua states a few to make the point clear.

Factors like fair wages and health care for all Pangea employees, 0 VOC manufacturing facility, and supporting fairly traded and organically grown agricultural products in over 40 countries goes into every organic product.

The bottles used are brown glass that is screen printed. Most people are unaware that anything that has a paper label causes hundreds to thousands of pounds of petrol waste. Nevertheless, paper labeling is cheaper. In addition to all this, glass is the only container that can be recycled forever because it never breaks down.

Pangea products were developed to reduce the waste of packaging, and their products last two to three times that of their competitor’s products. This goes especially for the shower gel that is modestly priced besides its environmentally friendly packaging. The organic seed-infused packaging sprouts plant life when planted!

Joshua Scott subscribes to the idea that operating a green business is not only good for the environment but is good for you too.

Solar Watches: No replacing batteries ever again!

By Beth McKenna

I admit to a watch fetish. To me, they’re (well, some) are like little works of art. I am partial to the point of mesmerized over Skagen watches, a Danish brand. Those Scandinavians have a way with sleek, clean lines and understated elegance. Though I’m proud of my Irish roots and feel Irish in many ways, sometimes I think there must have been a baby swap at the hospital where I was born and that my real parents are named Ingrid and Sven.

I’m now wearing one of my Skagens as my “everyday watch,” while another is sitting on my dresser with the time stuck at about 3:38. If there were an accurate date function on it, that lucky thing would still be luxuriating in some balmy summer temps! Yes, the battery “went” last summer and I haven’t gone to the jeweler to get it changed — mainly because I have another watch that I’m enjoying wearing, so I don’t need it. The last time I had to get a new battery, they couldn’t do it on the spot so I had to leave it and then pick it up when it was done. Though it’s a local shop, it’s kind of a pain having to make two trips just to get a battery changed.

If you can relate, you may want to get yourself a solar watch. Not only are there some darn attractive ones — from cool sport to sleek dress watches, you’ll never need to bother with replacing batteries again! So you’re helping yourself — unless you like those little chores (I suspect I have a family member who does — oh, Ingrid and Sven, come and get me!) and helping the environment at the same time.

Oh, and there’s the cool or conversation piece factor; I mean how many people have you run across who have a solar watch? Ingrid and Sven could even get themselves one as most of the solar watches I’ve come across can be charged by exposure to indoor lighting, as well as by sunshine. So, even those, like Scandinavians, who live in areas with very short days during the winter (or people anywhere who don’t get outside much) can easily recharge their watches’ battery.

Another benefit just came to me: you’re at a party, family or work function, or wherever, and you want to escape a person, a happening, or everyone at least for a bit. You now have a built-in — rather, strapped on — excuse as long as it’s light outside: you need to get outside ASAP as your solar watch’s battery is low! (You may want to keep the fact that it can recharge by exposure to indoor lighting hush. I think I will if I get one.)

Watches shown in pic:

Far left: Casio GW500AJP-1AV G-Shock men’s atomic solar watch — $52.50. (There’s a similar women’s model.) Has all the features you’d expect from a sports watch, plus others.

2nd from left: Citizen Stiletto Men’s Eco-Drive — $213.50. When fully charged, this one’s advertised to run for 180 days without additional exposure to light. A neat push button deployment clasp, too.

2nd from right: Citizen Women’s Silhouette Eco-Drive Watch #EG2240-56L — $104.50. This one reportedly tops the above’s power reserve as it has a 240-day reserve, and it can be recharged with just 3 hours of exposure to light.

Far right: Another Citizen Women’s Silhousette Eco-Drive — $120.

It seems Casio and Citizen, both Japanese companies, own the solar watch space. Timex (a U.S. company) and Pulsar (was a U.S. company; now owned by Seiko, a Japanese co.) also have several offerings.

(I was curious so checked the stock of Citizen and Casio. Neither trade on U.S, exchanges, but not a big deal as neither look like good investments. That said, Citizen’s stock had a steady rise from 2002-late 2006.)

Like my simple and sleek design around the watches? Not bad for an Irish person — or one raised to believe she was Irish, huh? I might make Ingrid and Sven proud yet.

Sony’s Green Odo Line: Twirl, Twirl, Click

Sony, Green Ahoy!

By Shabna John

Kinetic and solar energy: the two most abundant and free, resources on planet Earth. As long as babies are around, we will always have an abundance of kinetic energy. Me thinks God knew we would sooner or later turn to clean energy and so he made babies!

But on a more serious note Sony’s new Odo line (what kind of a name is that, anyway?) is going to be a serious contender for the latest eco-chic gadgets if they ever make it into production. Sony has thought of everyone with the Spin N’ Snap camera, Push Power Play device, Crank N’ Capture video cams, Pull N’ Play headphones and Juice Boxes all powered by a combination of kinetic and solar energy. (think of fun we can have with our hands!)
