Palm-Sized Stirling Engines and Tiny Cars

First patented in 1816 by Dr. Robert Stirling, the Stirling engine is seeing a renaissance of interest and technological development. Think Nordic, an electric car company in Norway, is working with inventor Dean Kamen on plans to install Stirling engines in the Think City, an otherwise all-electric vehicle that will be commercially available at the end of 2007, at least in Europe. The Think City (pictured) may be sold in the U.S. in mid-2008.

The Stirling engine can be more efficient and quieter in comparison to the more familiar internal combustion engine.

But you don’t have to wait for the Think City to hit showrooms, or for Stirling engines to come into widespread use - you can have your very own Stirling Engine for just $49.99. The Stirling Engine Kit “is a truly unique gift for the person who thought they had everything - an engine that seemingly runs on air!” Actually, the engine can run on the heat coming from your hand.

A unique Christmas gift for the eco-techno-nerd on your gift list. Some assembly required. Not suitable for children under 3 due to small parts.
