Here’s an industry for you to chew on, rather, invest in. Gelfuel. I’d like to see this industry swiftly replace the use of paraffins, or kerosene as it’s known in the U.S, despite the still high price of the former relative to latter, particularly in a country like South Africa where paraffin is a prominent home energy source and source of emissions-related respiratory problems and house fires.
Gelfuel is a renewable fuel, usually made from ethanol or another agricultural resource, that is a safer alternative to paraffin. It’s non-toxic if accidentally swallowed and it burns carbon-free. Yet another advantage of ethanol gels is avoiding the price fluctuation of paraffin with petrol.
Greenheat is one company that’s been distributing internationally from Durban and Jo’burg/Johannesburg, South Africa since 2000. Their research and development has been assisted by NGO’s and the private sector. They provide a range of domestic gelfuel based products, and if you’re prompted by the great outdoors, there’s also a selection of personal stoves and other camping products for your buying pleasure.
