Subway Restaurants Order Up Eco-Friendly Additions

Eat fresh -- and green

Is this sustainability effort catching on with businesses or what? Taking the lead in the fast-food arena, Subway Restaurants — makers of custom sandwiches — have announced steps to make their stores a little bit more environmentally friendly. From the article,

“Subway is working to make its stores more environmentally friendly by testing the use of recycling bins, cutting down on transportation fuel and switching to recycled napkins that the chain estimates will save about 147,000 trees a year.”

Imagine that. I would love to see more recycle bins in fast-food joints around the country. I understand that there’s often lacking a third-party to handle the waste, but for those without this issue it’s an immediate impact-maker. In addition to Subway’s recycle plans, they’re also going to be running a green building pilot program for a new store in Kissimmee, Fla. Built with recycled materials, it has more efficient heating and cooling systems, and uses high-efficiency lighting and plumbing systems that conserve water.

Great effort. Per Bill Hobb’s post this morning, it seems more restaurants may be picking up on the message. Let’s hope this is more than a trend.
