By now, most of the green blog-o-sphere has heard how this cool electric bike almost killed its creator earlier this summer. On a test run for reporters, the guy hit a van after his front breaks failed. Truly embarrassing.
However, inventor Bill Dupe took it all in stride and earlier this week broke records with a new obstacle-free test of the KillaCycle. For the first time ever, an electric vehicle has entered the “magic sevens” in quarter-mile trials. From the article,
“he KillaCycle made two runs of 7.824 and 7.991 seconds (with a 0-60mph time of under one second) at the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) California Bike Week event last weekend at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. The new official quarter mile record of 7.991 seconds is the sixth occasion KillaCycle has set a new world mark.”
0-60 in under a second! No wonder the guy hit a freakin’ van. Incredible. How do you hold on?
The new battery pack for the KillaCycle (designed by A123Systems) creates more than 500 horsepower via 1210 A123 Li-Ion “nanophosphate cells” weighing 186 pounds, 21 pounds heavier but with 150hp more power than its predecessor. Not only are these cells safer, but they also have the unique ability to charge to high capacity in 5 min or less. It’s no wonder then that GM chose them as a strategic partner for their upcoming E-Flex architecture for the Chevy Volt and other green vehicles.
