Hybrid Helicopter-Airplane Uses Less Fuel, Needs Therapy

Post #27 for the 2007 Green Blogathon

Spain’s National Institute of Aerospace Technology has developed the first airplane-helicopter hybrid called HADA. Basically, this thing takes off and lands like a helicopter and then zooms along as an airplane. Supposedly, this efficiency in design consumes only one-third of the amount of fuel normally used by conventional aircraft.

Additionally, the HADA can either be manned or unmanned and stay airborne for three to six hours. Spain’s military plans on using the copter plane to monitor borders, deliver supplies (up to 150kg), and provide surveillance.
