I can’t tell you how many small containers of used oil I have in my garage awaiting disposal at a local gas station. I’m sure I’m not alone. In fact, more often than not the sad reality is that people probably dump more oil than they properly dispose. Today, however, I’m excited to say that a greener option exists.
A company called Green Earth Technologies has announced a completely biodegradable motor oil that the company claims is “guaranteed to protect engines as well as the leading brands, but without the environmental hazards or dependence on foreign oil.”
No foreign oil? That’s right, this brand is made from good old American animal fat. According to the site, “G-OIL is made utilizing a proprietary process that converts tallow (fat) from a solid raw material into completely biodegradable motor oil for gasoline and diesel engines as well as hybrid cars.”
They’ve even discovered a way to make the production process more efficient than with petroleum-based oils. Apparently, it takes nearly three barrels of oil to make one barrel of product; whereas Green Earth scientists have developed a way to yield one barrel of product from one barrel of animal fat.
On the biodegradable side, when mixed with a separate product called G-DISPOSOIL, G-OIL can be converted into soil. The reaction turns the used oil into biodegradable smaller pieces that are easily consumed by microorganisms in the earth. According to the site, this process takes only about a second.
A truly revolutionary product — and with the US market alone worth $7 billion — there’s potential for a dramatic impact. Waste oil be gone! Hit the site for more.
