LIGHTS OUT San Fran—How About the Rest of Us Give it a Whirl

Turn That Light Out Will Ya??

Today’s the day for San Franciscan’s to turn out the lights!  They have been asked to refrain from using all non-essential electric lights today, October 20th from 8-9  P.M.

One hour of lights off translates into as much as 15% reduction of energy consumed on a Saturday night just for that short hour. The Bay Bridge and TranAmerica Building have both agreed to participate  in this unique opportunity. The grassroots organization that started  here is run by local environmentalists, activists, technologists, writers and educators who all feel it is important to start looking at ways to combat global warming.

The program is similar to Earth Hour in Sydney, AU in which 2.2 million people participated with an estimated savings of 24.86 tons of CO2.

My mantra continues that conservation is the key to solving this problem, not more stuff, not more power plants, but moderation in how we live and looking to the future–how our lives will affect the lives of our grandchildren’s grandchildren!
