The Bamboo Bike: Because Carbon Fiber Is So Year 2000

It'll grow on you.

Nothing like the feel of Bamboo between your legs, on a 40 mile trek. That’s right, carbon fiber is passé for Calfee bikes of Santa Cruz, CA. What started as an errand bike for owner, Craig Calfee, soon turned into a production quality bike that will be custom built specifically for each rider depending on height and weight. Bamboo and hemp are used in production in place of the usual carbon fiber, therefore giving the bike a limited carbon footprint.

The bike isn’t just a pretty, conscious face either. The bamboo is smoked and then heat treated to create an ultra tough frame that dampens vibrations on long rides. It’ll set you back around $2,700, but come on, that baby will look pretty sweet sitting out in front of your local, organic, fair trade, shade grown, coffee purveyor.
